This lesson introduces learners to the various external influences that can impact businesses. We start by looking at the PESTLE factors and what they include, we then look at Porter’s five forces before reading a case study on Morrison’s and the top four supermarkets in the UK. A 10 mark question with structure guidance and a concise model answer is included for students to look at and improve their own answers after peer assessments. To consolidate the PESTLE factors we read a concise fact file on the housing market, students use this information and their own research to find out more about the housing market, and then feedback the PESTLE factors they think are impacting on the housing market. This set of resources (1x PPT and 8x word docs) can be delivered over 3-4 lessons and introduces learners to the importance of business planning with an emphasis on cash flow forecasting. We start by looking at what’s included in a business plan and the purpose of creating one, a group matching cards activity to consolidate the contents of the business plan. We then go on to looking at the importance of a positive cash flow, and how to construct a cash flow forecast from scratch step by step (although this isn’t required it helps understand the topic well). Students then go on to consolidate this by creating a cash flow forecast for Ian Beale’s fish and chip shop, some further calculation practice followed. This is followed by 2 x 12 mark questions, one on business planning and one on cash flow forecasting based on Ian Beale’s forecast. This double lesson introduces learners to price elasticity of demand - a tricky concept at first but this resource breaks everything down step by step with plenty of calculation and essay exam practice. We start by looking at the concept of elasticity with an engaging Eastenders starter, we learn the key formulas needed to tackle any PED questions before looking at examples of some inelastic products. Students have the opportunity to calculate PED questions with answers on the board to show how answers are reached.
